Mildred McClain, Ed.D.

Mildred McClain, Ed.D., is Executive Director of Citizens for Environmental Justice, Inc., the Harambee House, Inc., and the Southern Association of Black Educators, Inc., in Savannah, GA. Dr. McClain founded Citizens for Environmental Justice, which delivers environmental education and information to African American and low-income communities. The Harambee House is a community center which focuses on political, socio-economic and community empowerment. The Southern Association of Black Educators works to uplift young people in the community. Dr. McClain has worked as a human rights activist for 30 years, as a teacher, administrator and consultant. Her work experience includes: Executive Director of Hands Across America of Georgia and the Georgia Citizens Coalition on Hunger (1987-89); Project Director of the Georgia Citizens Coalition on Hunger (1982-87); Project Director of the Morris Brown College Learning Resources Center (1984-85); Project Director, Florida Clearinghouse on Prisons & Jails (1978-79); Senior Consultant, Educational Enterprises (1972-87); and Teacher (1969-71 and 1978-79).

Dr. McClain has presented papers and served as keynote speaker on a variety of topics, including Education for Blacks in Development Issues of Incarcerated Women; Urban Development Empowerment of the Poor; Family Building; Critical Issues Facing Black America; Third World Development; Racism; Southern Politics; Nicaragua and the Atlantic Coast; Black Women Leaders; The Role of Women in Development; and Youth Advocacy and Apartheid. Her education includes Ed.D. and M.A. degrees from Harvard Graduate School of Education;, and an M.A. from Antioch Graduate School of Education Administration.
