National Environmental Policy Commission
Introduction
On March 8, 2002 an orientation meeting for the National Environmental
Policy Commission was held in Washington, DC. The Commission is
an outgrowth of recommendations from a Congressional Black Caucus
Environmental Justice Braintrust under the leadership of Congressman
James E. Clyburn, D-SC. The purpose of the NEPC is to recommend
strategies that will assist policy makers in the development of
forward-thinking, comprehensive environmental policy that recognizes
and fosters the unique relationship between environmental protection,
human health, environmental justice and economic development. For
the coming year, the NEPC will have a particular focus on international,
labor, housing and transportation issues as they relate to this
policy. The Commission is composed of representatives (see
list) from business and industry, health organizations, academia,
environmental justice communities, and tribal, state and local governments.
To accomplish this mission, the Commission is conducting a series
of Listening Sessions.
Listening Session
The next Listening Session will be held on the campus of Seattle University. The Session will be held May 9, 2003 from 9 am to 5 pm in the LeRoux Room of the Student Center. Those wishing to address the Commission will have the opportunity to submit a prepared written statement that includes issue identification and recommendations. Participants will have three minutes to present a summary of their statements. Coordinating partners for this initiative include the Medical University of South Carolina Department of Library Science and Informatics, South Carolina State University Transportation Center, and the University of South Carolina School of Public Health.
