International Case Studies in Risk Assessment and Risk Management
In March 1996, the Medical University of South Carolina convened 100 experts in
environmental risk assessment and risk management to review international approaches
to risk. The program included six Case Study presentations, detailing efforts in the
United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands and Australia. This videotape includes
program highlights and the Summary Panel Discussion in its entirety.

International Case Studies for Community Based Stakeholders
In late 1997, the program partners presented a case studies program with a community-level
audience in mind. The process began with development of an informal advisory group, including
representatives of various community interests. The advisory group suggested a two-day format,
including presentation if the three international case studies most applicable to a community-level
audience, followed by a made-for-television dialogue.

Living With Risk: Cancer Risk in the Savannah River Region
In 1999, the program partners agreed that the findings of a regional cancer registry
would make an excellent context for dialogue on environment-related disease. Using
the Savannah River Region Health Information System (SRRHIS) registry's findings, the
partners produced the latest Living With Risk dialogue. The program aired statewide in
South Carolina on April 20, 2000, and will be distributed nationwide via satellite in June 2000.

Evironmental Justice
The conference, "Environmental Justice: Strengthening the Bridge Between Economic
Development and Sustainable Communities," focused on national and international issues
in human health and the environment, environmental justice, and economic development. The
conference provided a forum for people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to share
their knowledge and expertise about Environmental Justice and impart valuable information
that will lead to balanced and equitable national environmental policy.

National Environmental Policy Commission
On August 7, 2000 an orientation meeting for the National Environmental Policy Commission
was held in Washington, DC. The Commission is an outgrowth of recommendations from a
Congressional Black Caucus Environmental Justice Braintrust under the leadership of
Congressman James E. Clyburn, D-SC.
The goal of the Commission is to identify environmental issues and to articulate a range of
policy alternatives for consideration by policy makers. In meeting this goal, the Commission
will deliberate and report on appropriate roles for human health, environmental protection,
environmental justice and economic development considerations in a comprehensive environmental policy.

American Indian and Alaskan Native Environmental Justice Roundtable
On August 3-4, the Federal Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice (IWG)
convened the "American Indian and Alaskan Native Environmental Justice Roundtable"
in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Roundtable was held on the campus of the Southwestern
Indian Polytechnic Institute. Issues addressed included the roles of federal, state,
local and tribal governments concerning environmental justice, industrial development
in Indian Country and the use of government collaboration to address human health and
environmental justice in Indian Country.
